Oxford And Cambridge Scholarships 2011 from The Said Foundation

These Guidance Notes are intended to answer your questions about the Foundation and its scholarship criteria, and also to guide you through completing the application process for Oxford and Cambridge.

The Said Foundation is a charity based in the UK. One of our aims is to promote education and development in the Middle East. To this end, the Foundation offers a number of partial or full-cost scholarships annually to enable graduates to pursue postgraduate courses and other training at Oxford and Cambridge universities. The Foundation will consider applications for one year postgraduate courses and for PhDs/DPhils.

From 2011/12, the Foundation will award one or two PHD scholarships a year. These will be of three years’ duration.
Scholarship criteria for the academic year 2011/2012

As the Foundation’s funds are limited and it receives many applications for scholarships each year, the Board of Trustees sets criteria and priorities for applicants. All applicants must meet these criteria. For the academic year 2011/2012, the Foundation’s criteria are as follows.

Applications are restricted to candidates who are Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian or Palestinian;

Scholarships are offered for postgraduate study or training only. Applications for undergraduate study cannot be considered.

Applications from candidates who will be forty years old or more at the beginning of the 2011/2012 academic year cannot be considered;

Evidence of proficiency in English is required by the Foundation and must be at the level required by Oxford or Cambridge;

Applicants must hold a first degree of a high enough standard to indicate that they are likely to complete their proposed course of study at Oxford or Cambridge successfully;

Applicants cannot be considered if they have not followed the proper application procedures for Oxford or Cambridge;

Candidates must be in genuine need of partial or full funding;

Successful applicants are required to sign a binding undertaking to apply the skills and knowledge they have gained in one of the Foundation’s target countries (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine).

Priority will be given to applicants with work experience whose studies will benefit their field of work. Candidates must normally have at least two years work experience but exceptional applicants who do not meet this requirement may be considered;

Applications from candidates whose siblings or spouses are currently being supported by the Foundation cannot be considered.

Applying to the Foundation

The Foundation awards a number of scholarships each academic year at Oxford and Cambridge. There are no quotas per country and scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit. Each application is carefully considered by the trustees and staff of the Foundation and the best candidates overall are chosen. The Foundation bases its decisions on academic record, financial need, likelihood to succeed in the UK, usefulness of subject to the applicant’s country, motivation, future career intentions, practical ability to make use of the knowledge to be gained in the UK on return to the Middle East and personality.

If you are awarded another scholarship and require partial funding, the Foundation is happy to consider this request. The Foundation does not choose its scholars according to how much funding they require but bases its decisions on the factors set out in the paragraph above.

The Application Procedure

Further details on application procedures are found below. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply online.

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees makes the final selection by end of July at the latested. You will be informed by the Foundation or Oxford or Cambridge of the outcome of your application. The Trustees’ decision is final and there is no right of appeal. Please do not use your contacts to lobby for your scholarship application. This will not help, and may harm, your application.

After submission of your postgraduate course admission application by the required deadline your application is considered by the university. If you are offered a place by the university your application is then considered by the Foundation in London. The Foundation interviews all of the candidates it has shortlisted. Interviews take place in May/June in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine.

DTU Nanotech Doctoral scholarships in Organic Synthesis and Polymer Chemistry

CBIO group of Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech) offer 2 (two) full doctoral scholarships. The position will be part of colloboration CBIO group with some Pharma and Medico companies in Denmark, and part of larger effort in developing of synthetic gene delivery systems at the forefront of research in nanomedicine.
Position 1: Surface engineering of nanoparticles
One of the major tasks in the development of nanoparticle systems for both drug delivery and diagnostic applications is controlled surface functionalization and surface coating. We need to develop multienveloped systems where modern synthetic chemistry is a highly important tool. There is furthermore a need to develop new synthetic tools for the quantification of the biomolecular functionalization and to characterize how this is influenced by nanoparticle surface chemistry and morphology. This position is open to a student with a background in organic synthesis or polymer chemistry.

Position 2: Biodegradable transfection systems
Current cellular transfection strategies of DNA/RNA utilize cationic lipid and polymer systems (polyplexes) that show cellular toxicity and are thus unsuitable for in vivo use. There is a need to develop new biodegradable polymer systems that are less toxic to cells. This PhD project is focused on the synthesis of new polymers for lowering the toxicity without hampering the transfection efficiency. One part of the project is focused on fluorescent labeling of the polyplexes to conduct cellular trafficking and organelle localization experiments. The successful candidate will have a background in synthetic organic chemistry or polymer chemistry.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the Doctoral degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. See the DTU PhD Guide if you need information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies.

PhD Student Position in Gasification of Biomass – Gas Cleaning, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

The Division of Energy Technology within the Department of Energy and Environment at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a position as PhD student.
The research within the Department of Energy and Environment covers a wide field within the areas energy and environment/sustainable development, from a global perspective to industrial, building, and product scale. The research fields include energy technology and energy conversion, conducted both experimentally and theoretically, and development, use and evaluation of methods and tools for analysis of technical systems, regarding both environment/sustainable development and energy. In total some 150 persons are working in six divisions at the department.

Gasification of biomass is seen as one of the most promising technologies for the production of renewable fuels that can replace fossil fuels in all energy sectors – transport, industry and heat and power supply. At the division of Energy Technology at Chalmers we work with several industrial partners to take forward knowledge and new technologies to meet the request of the society to break today’s dependence of fossil fuels.

The efficient cleaning of producer gas from gasification is the key for the efficient production of 2nd generation fuels biofuels such like dimethyl ester (DME), Fischer-Tropsch-diesel (FT diesel) and substitute natural gas (SNG). However, present cleaning technologies are costly and energy intensive preventing the introduction of these fuels. Goal is the development of a low-cost, simple and reliable gas cleaning system that breaks down tars (long hydro carbons) and removes simultaneously sulfur.

The solution of this task is vital for the commercialization of the production of large quantities of biofuels (methane, methanol, synthetic Diesel, etc) from biomass. The technology is based on Chemical Looping Reforming (CLR) and is funded by E.On, directed strategic governmental funding and Swedish research council.

Information about the gasifier and the gas cleaning activities at Chalmers

CLR is a special application of Chemical Looping Combustion and more about the CLC activities at Chalmers

Job description
The work will primarily have an experimental focus on the potential of using different bed materials, such as different ores and manufactured materials based on, for example, nickel. The work will as well include work dedicated to the optimization of the process emphasized toward scale up of the CLR process. The work will be carried out at the division of Energy Technology Department of Energy and Environment.

This PhD project will be a part of the gasification research at Chalmers, which is a group of more than ten researchers.
