PhD position in in molecular genetics

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 4 years
Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Biology (Cell and Organism Biology), Lund
First day of employment: 2011-03-01
Official Records Number: NPA 2010/446

Job Assignments
The EU Marie Curie training network Cornucopia
(http://www.biologi.lu.se/upload/biologi/CORNUCOPIA_PhDadvertisement.pdf ) will train a new generation of young scientists focusing on less studied yeasts with interesting traits, which could be applied in the food and health sectors. The yeast kingdom includes more than 1.500 other species that display a variety of unusual characteristics but have so far been only poorly studied. These yeasts represent a large untapped potential to develop novel food and health related processes and products. You will investigate genes behind carbon metabolism, aromas and/or probiotic properties in nonconventional yeasts, using molecular biology, in vitro evolution, genomic and post-genomic, and genetic tools. You will "domesticate" new isolates and develop mutant strains which can be easily handled in the lab and even used for applied purposes. In addition to pursuing postgraduate studies, the doctoral student may also perform other duties,
including research, teaching and administration, according to the specific university and department regulations.

Eligibility

For all Marie Curie Fellows EU restrictions regarding mobility apply. At the time of the relevant deadline for submission of proposals, or selection by the host organisation, depending on the action, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Sweden for more than 12 months during the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. The Ph.D. applicants should have less than 4 years of research experience.

Applicants for the Ph.D. positions must hold a M.Sc. degree or equivalent courses to an extent of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 are at advanced level, or corresponding proficiencies. The obtained degrees should be in the area of Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Medical Sciences or equivalent. The student must be able to communicate orally and in writing in English at a satisfactory level. A good background in molecular genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology is necessary. Documented experience with yeast molecular genetics and/or fermentation techniques is an advantage.

These scholarships were made available to outstanding students from developing countries and economies in transition, for a period of up to two years at the Masters.

Education for Sustainable Energy Development (ESED) was selected by the e8 as the theme for the 2004-2005 Chairmanship Year. The year 2005 marked the start of the UN Decade for Education and thus constituted an opportunity for e8 leadership and profile in the area of education with a focus on sustainable energy development. An e8 report on ESED in Africa, Asia and Latin America provide the background for this selection.

In 2004, the Scholarship Programme was evaluated and a comprehensive assessment of options for supporting ESED was prepared. The e8 members decided to establish a five-year Programme of Action, consisting of the following programmes:
