2011 VU University Medical Center Offers Doctorate Position Physics of Spine Development, Netherlands

PhD Position in the field of Physics of Spine Development at VU University Medical Center in Netherlands-2011
    Study Subject(s):Physics of Spine Development
    Course Level:PhD
Scholarship Provider: VU University Medical Center

Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands
Eligibility:The candidate we are looking for should be recently graduated from a MSc program in physics, biochemistry, medical physics, or strongly related field. Other requirements are: Knowledge and experience in soft matter physics or materials science; Additional experience with cells or biomolecules is a plus; Strong affinity for multidisciplinary research; Capacity to write and communicate fluently in English.

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The spine is a highly complex and remarkable structure: it consists of a stack of bony vertebrae separated by cartilaginous intervertebral discs which act as elastic hinges. It is an open question how such complex functional structures form during embryonic development. It appears that physical processes play a pivotal role, since the architectures of both the vertebral bone and the intervertebral disc seem optimally structured to deal with specific mechanical loads.Your position is part of a recently granted (VICI-award) multi-disciplinary research program on the self-organisation of structured connective tissues. The leading hypothesis is that mechanical cues steer the activity of cells as well as the assembly and alignment of extracellular matrix molecules. The aims of this PhD project are to measure the physical cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions by optical tweazers; to elucidate the extra-cellular process of matrix self-assembly by microscopy; and to measure the mechanical properties of cells and extracellular matrix components by microrheology. Other PhD positions within this program will address the developmental biology of the spine and computational modeling of self-assembly in connective tissues.

Uppsala University offers PhD Position in Comparative Physiology/fish Reproductive Physiology, Sweden

at the Department of Organismal biology (Evolutionary Biology Centre). http://www.ebc.uu.se/Research/IOB_eng/comphys/
Starting date: 1 September 2011 (or as agreed).

The research group focuses on understanding the physiological mechanism involved in sexual maturation in fish, mainly salmonids. As in other vertebrates, reproduction in fish is governed by the endocrine axis - brain-pituitary-gonads (B-P-G axis).
At the onset of sexual maturation gonadotropin-releasing hormone produced by neurons in the brain stimulates the synthesis and release of pituitary gonadotropins, which promote gonad development and steroidogenesis. The B-P-G axis itself is submitted to the control of external factors (e.g. photoperiod and temperature) as well as other factors (e.g. growth and metabolic status including energy stores). The underlying controlling mechanisms of the initiation of sexual maturation (puberty) are still poorly understood. The PhD project aims to understand the endocrine and molecular signaling pathways linking metabolic status and the reproductive axis during sexual maturation.
We are looking for student with a strong interest in research. Candidates should have a master degree or equivalent in biology and a good knowledge in physiology, cell and molecular biology. Experience in cell and molecular biological techniques are an advantage. Proficiency in English is a requirement.
The application should include a CV, authorized copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records and a letter of intention (max 2 pages), where you describe yourself, your research interest and research experience. In addition the application should include relevant publications, a copy of the MSc thesis and contact information for at least two references.
The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The successful candidate will receive a postgraduate fellowship the first year and a postgraduate position year 2-4. The position can be combined with up to 20% of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly.
For more information please contact Professor Monika Schmitz (phone +46 18 471 4404, monika.schmitz@ebc.uu.se). Union representatives are Anders Grundström, Saco-rådet, phone +4618-471 53 80 and Carin Söderhäll, TCO/ST, phone +4618-471 19 96 and Stefan Djurström, Seko, phone +4618-471 33 15.
You are welcome to submit your application no later than June 30th, 2011, UFV-PA 2011/1425. Use the link below to access the application form.

The overall vision of the project is to develop new hydraulic active (pozzolanic) materials (SCM’s) based on naturally occurring minerals that can partly replace Portland clinkers in blends, thereby contributing to a low embodied energy consumption and a substantial reduction in CO2 emission associated with cement and concrete. The Post doctoral project will focus on the theoretical part in predicting pozzolanic activity of SCMs and modelling the hydrate phase assemblages for mixtures of Portland cement, SCM, water, and admixtures. The principal approach in this part of the project is thermodynamic modelling and it will be performed in collaboration with the partners of the project that have expertises in this field and with two PhD students associated to SCM project.

Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Computer Graphics, University of Strasbourg, France

Fully Funded PhD Studentship on: Shape Analysis and Registration of People using Dynamic Data funded by French National Agency for Research.
    Study Subject(s):Computer Graphics
    Course Level:PhD
    Scholarship Provider: University of Strasbourg
Scholarship can be taken at: France

    Eligibility:
    - Master in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics
    - Good programming/communication skills
    - Good level of English is an obligation.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Yes
Scholarship Description: This PhD topic is part of SHARED research project funded by the French National Agency for Research (ANR). The net salary will be approximately 1500 Euros per month (comfortable for living in France). Context: Shape registration and analysis of people’s surface dataset has become a new mainstream, gradually replacing conventional methods based on 2-dimensional images. Across a variety of disciplines ranging from anthropometry, computer aided design (CAD) computer graphics, and psychology, adopting 3D laser scanners for surface shape capture and building statistical models from a set of registered surface data is now widely accepted. While there is a large amount of research done on the static datasets with a proliferation of algorithms and a solid theoretical background, this does not seem to be the case for dynamic, time-varying datasets, due to the limited accessibility to the dynamic surface. In most of the shape capture sessions, the person is required to remain motionless during the scanning time. Naturally, current registration techniques (and therefore shape analysis techniques) handle the geometric features of static dataset, and the dynamic behavior of people’s skin relatively remain unsaid. This is unfortunate, since dynamic features cannot be captured solely by using geometric features when the target subjects undergo deformation. Although the use of geometric feature based on anatomical knowledge is still a golden standard, it is quite obvious that it may generate results with limited capability of reliable correspondence computation, because some commonly observed subjects like human body are highly mobile and drastically change not only its spatial arrangement but also geometric features over time.
